Toss Your Server Into the Compost Bin?

the future of data centers biodegradable servers

What’s next on the Green Data Center front – Biodegradable servers?  Facebook is sponsoring an Open Compute foundation contest with Purdue University’s College of Technology to develop a sustainable server chassis. They are attempting to make computers out of biodegradable, compostable materials like cardboard. Does this sound crazy to you? Maybe not.

Rapid advances in technology lead to computers being quickly outdone by a superior model, and servers are now typically replaced at least every four years. This results in a lot of waste from Data Centers.  If this project is successful, this could bring the IT industry one step closer to saving mother earth.
